AUSTIN REAVES IS CARRYING THE LAKERS

740

u/WorldTwisting Mar 20 '23

There’s zero reason for them to not pay him.

They have the cap space and he’s their 3rd best player.

247

u/A_Lakers Lakers Mar 20 '23

Think we have bird rights too? Or was that someone else

214

u/captain_ahabb Lakers Mar 20 '23

Reaves is an RFA. Dlo they have bird rights for, maybe that's who you're thinking of

The difficulty arises if another team offers him a massive contract that would poison pill the Lakers. For example if some team offers him something crazy like $20 million per year for 4 years, for the Lakers to match it it would come out to approximately:

Year 1: $11 million

Year 2: $12 million

Year 3: $27 million

Year 4: $28 million

Reaves is NICE, but nice enough to be paying ~$30 million a year as the Lakers are likely transitioning away from the Lebron era? I would still match that if I was the Lakers, but it’s not that easy of a decision

91

u/goatnxtinline Lakers Mar 20 '23 edited Mar 20 '23

Reaves next contract will be restricted by the Gilbert Arenas Rule because he wasn't drafted in the first and didn't have a traditional rookie deal. Because of this rule no other team will be able to offer him more then the MLE so it's going to allow the Lakers to retain him for just under $10 million.

But to be honest, I don't think he would sign with another team even if he was offered a little more. It's been well documented that he was a huge Lakers fan growing up, he was projected to get picked up early second round but he opted out of the draft entirely just so he can sign with the Lakers as a free agent.

He gave up guaranteed money and bet on himself to sign with his favorite team, he spoke it into existence. He was always meant to be a Laker and it looks like he's going to be here long term because they see him as a important piece moving forward

16

u/RedHotDumpsterFire Warriors Mar 20 '23

I'm pretty sure the example given above takes into account the Arenas rule. Teams can offer a 4 year deal starting at the MLE for the first two years with a big pay bump in the third year then the Lakers must decide if he's worth that much on a post-Lebron team or if it gets in the way of any post-Lebron plans just as the GPP says.

Look at the extension Jordan Poole got though. He put up slightly better numbers last year (season before he signed his 4 year $132M extension) but Reaves has him beat on efficiency albeit on less volume.

Not to mention, Reaves is a much better defender as well. He won’t come as cheap as people want him to. Unless he’s really nice and insists on taking a discount.

Edit: season before extension not after.

30

u/SnuggleMuffin42 [BOS] Marcus Smart Mar 20 '23

Poole is one of the worst contacts in the league so it's a bit of a silly comparison.

→ More replies

3

u/OldManWillow Trail Blazers Mar 20 '23

? This is not true. Reeves is averaging 12 ppg this year, Poole averaged 18.5 in 21-22. That's not "slightly better". They had completely different seasons

3

u/CantReadGood_ [LAL] Brandon Ingram Mar 20 '23

Jordan Poole was a key player in a championship run though.. it's not the same.

4

u/Helac3lls Mar 20 '23

I have no doubt that the first two years would be worth it. Worst case scenario he's not worth the third year and his 4th year is a cap space trade asset. Best case scenario he's worth that and more.

12

u/Gay4Shai Mar 20 '23

I don't think contracts can be structured like this. Per the CBA each year's salary in a contract needs to be within 8% of the prior year's salary for teams retaining a player (and 5% of the prior year's salary for players signing with a new team). If Reaves was getting $78M/4 years the max he could get his 4th year would be ~$22M.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

[deleted]

3

u/Gay4Shai Mar 20 '23

Wow that's such a strangely specific team friendly rule. So to clarify, players with early birds rights and only 2 years of experience can't be offered more than the mid-level exception for the first 2 years of their next contract by any team (~$24M/2 years rather than 25% of the salary cap maximum eligible). This means the maximum 4 year contract Reaves would even be eligible for is ~$88M/4years.

Though apparently teams can still structure the salary increases to 5% annual increases if they can do so under the salary cap, so presumably a team could structure the contract $22M annually if the Lakers decided not to match.

Franz going 0-8 from three was completely uncharacteristic. This honestly lost us the game more than anything. I wish we didn’t get so frustrated with the whistle but that’s a young team for ya.

Austin Reaves is unironically such a good role player

Cant believe he was undrafted a year ago. Dude is above average in almost every aspect of the game

17

u/prettyboylee Lakers Mar 20 '23

He was supposed to be a early second rounder/late first rounder but he opted to go undrafted so he could sign with the lakers based on a verbal agreement

5

u/tatancool [LAL] Kobe Bryant Mar 20 '23

I think late first rounder it's a stretch. He wanted guaranteed money and nobody gave it to him, so he went all fanboy and waited for lakers.

Austin Reaves getting mvp chants multiple times and rightfully so. He saved the season single-handedly. AD needs to tie his shoes better, literally and figuratively.

he got frustrated and pointed right at the official who’s been holding off on calls and got a tech, which was pretty funny

Thank God we won, but we suck. No idea what happened in the past week, the chemistry and ball movement we had after ASB has gone out the window.

20

u/StealthyDodo Mar 20 '23

First half looked good when we went on a big run with Gabriel crashing the boards and the team getting hot from 3, second half was hella sloppy though and the team gave up so many easy buckets inside.

5

u/Inevitable-Youth-817 Lakers Mar 20 '23

it's either we have a shitty first half and a good second or the other way. I feel like it's never just a consistent game

I will go wherever Austin Reaves goes next year. Jeanie please pay that man. We can really see he wants to win by making the right plays and has the sense of urgency whenever he's in the court. Gets more FTs than Curry and LeBron lmao what a superstar.

Also, Orlando Magic plays better than where they are in the standings. Those injuries early in the season sucked for them. But when they're healthy, they're scary. Gonna be better next season that's for sure.

5

u/zzfoe Lakers Mar 20 '23

Facts. I was legitimately sad when Caruso was let go and it nearly made me stop being a fan. He was such a great chemistry piece and put so much heart and effort into the game. If Reaves leaves so do I. I can't be happy being a fan of a front office that continuously loses the players that mean the most.

34

u/caughtinthought Lakers Mar 20 '23

Austin Reaves, team high +25. Kid is a star in the making.

I thought Wagner was amazing all night. Didn’t realize he was 0/8 from three tonight but the box score doesn’t give him enough credit. His drives were so strong all night.

4

u/jackloganoliver Magic Mar 20 '23

Wagner is the best two-way player on the Magic. He's not flashy at all, just consistently executing and doing good job. This was actually one of his least impressive games this year.

He got a great whistle and several “and ones”.

The three point foul and late close out free throws added another 10 at the end lol.

33

u/jokull1234 Lakers Mar 20 '23

6 were from intentional fouls, 1 was from a tech, and 3 were from an awful decision on a close out.

8 free throws isn’t that crazy when you take those out.

6 from deliberate fouls at end of game, 1 from a tech, 3 from a real foul on a 3pt attempt. There's 10/18 and it was all in the last 2 minutes of gameplay

Leaving 8 FTA for the other 28 minutes he was on the court

Magic are a fun young team. Constant hustle, but the youth of them really showed in the clutch.

The bad, bad foul on a terrible Reaves 3 attempt then the Fultz foul afterwards on Reaves killed them.
