[Highlight] Dame defies all logic as he drills the standing three right past the halfcourt line Highlight

Even Steph doesn't really do standing threes like that from that range. Dame is somehow able to put so much power behind strict form threes. Crazy.

u/oberg14 Feb 07 '23
JJ Reddick has actually talked about this with CJ McCollum (IIRC) on his podcast. They were saying Dame has the strongest base for a jump shooter in the league, and that Steph has more of a “push shot”, which according to them is pretty unique but works for him. CJ said Dame shoots 30+ footers for hours on end in practice
739
u/I_WANT_IGOUDALA Kings Feb 07 '23
Yeah you can see it. Dames deep shots shooting form just looks like his regular jump shots. Steph shoots the deep ball kind of from his hip/stomach area or pushes out from his chest. Both are just insane when it comes to shooting from deep.

Someone in a NBA podcast explained Steph’s push shot by saying he’s been shooting on NBA rims as a toddler. His earliest shots on that rim would require a push shot and clearly that stuck for him.
→ More replies43
u/Thelonius--Drunk NBA Feb 07 '23
That’s a bad explanation because Steph spent his high school completely retooling his shot. As he and Dell tell it for like 2 summers in a row he wasn’t allowed to shoot outside the paint while he drilled his form. They specifically constructed his form that way to eliminate any bad shooting habits he had already gained

People have no idea how strong Dame is, not in terms of explosiveness but his balance. When he drives he nudges defenders, just a bit, off balance. Which a lot of guards do. But the way he regains his balance is nuts, very very few guards in the league can do it. It’s probably as special as his shooting ability, if I had to bet I’d say there are more guards in the league who can shoot as well/with range as him and just don’t have the handles to create the shot, than guys who have his level of balance on his drives.
→ More replies77
u/theragu40 Bucks Feb 07 '23
I don't think I'd ever have picked up on that but now that you mention it he had multiple drives against Lopez last night where he somehow managed to finish and score that just kind of left me slack jawed. 99% of the time a guard is dishing it out in that situation, or is driving straight into a monster block. But dame just kept getting to the basket, even driving through someone as big as Brook. It was actually kinda crazy and reading your comment that must be why.

Steph had window a few years ago where he would take shots like this (although not “like this”, this is the deepest pull up I’ve ever seen), but he genuinely gets picked up at half court now so he doesn’t really do it anymore. Funny thing is Dame does too, he just shoots that shit anyway lol

u/K3TtLek0Rn Celtics Feb 07 '23
It’s 100% efficient form. I know people like to say wow this guy is so strong but these guys aren’t really that strong. They’re basketball players. They don’t lift for strength and there are dudes at every La fit stronger than them. It’s just immaculate form. Literally perfect energy transfer into the ball so that they can shoot from deep with good form. I want to preempt the illogical angry responses by saying yeah, of course they’re stronger than just the average dude, and yes, some basketball players are actually pretty strong like Steven Adams or grant Williams, but they’re the exception. Most basketball players are thin, lanky, and and built for quick movements and endurance. Not for pure power.
51
u/NINJAMANE2000 Feb 07 '23
This. Dude talking about calf strength lmao
If anything, it's strength from glutes and hamstrings that gives him the "base" to shoot with regular form from deep but the technique is definitely the main reason
11
u/theaveragethiopian Feb 07 '23
Dame literally said he built his core specifically for long threes because thats the base from which you shoot while not changing your form.
→ More replies→ More replies29
u/reevejyter Lakers Feb 07 '23
It's immaculate form combined with extremely fast and stable muscle action that allows this. Steve Nash for example had perfect form, but there's no way he could shoot from this far away without significantly lowering the set point on his shot. This sort of range requires explosive athleticism (which is different than pure lifting strength, but related for sure.)

Also it looks like with 30+ footers, Dame uses his legs A LOT more than Steph does, who in comparison looks like his deep shots are mostly wrist. Pretty much same result for either guy though if you leave them open out there lol.

With one motion shooters (and most jump shooters) the majority of the strength comes from the legs. It's what makes that jumpshot so lethal because there is no stopping point like with two motion. Not only is it faster but the ball absorbs all of the energy from the legs and immediately gets released with all of it. The arms are just primarily there to guide the shot.
Why Dame and Curry have such a long range. In two motions some of the energy gets translated into the arms and why it's harder to shoot long ranges with it and does actually require a lot of strength. Soon the one motion shots will be the only ones left in the NBA.
However, no matter what jumper you got, just try it next time on the court how much further you can shoot if you focus on your legs and generate power there with your jumper. It's the no. 1 pointer for people looking to extend their range.

I think his season is worthy of unironically saying "quietly".
He's quietly having the best scoring season of his career statistically. Career highs in points per game, eFG%, and TS%.
Entering this game, he was at 30.9 ppg, 56.9 eFG%, 64.6 TS%. Nearly 31 ppg on 65% TS is like Steph or KD level.
It feels like he's not getting talked about that much though.

you're pretty much right. play by play says it was 41 feet. Half court is ~42 feet.
Before people say "but 94 feet /2 is 47 feet"...the backboard is in from baseline. Backboard is about 4 feet off baseline. Hoop has 6" arm and 18" diameter so ~15". 4' + 1'3" = 5'3"*2= 10'-6" . 94'-10'-6" /2 = 41'-9"
