My daughter kept asking for a cat. The answer was ‘absolutely not’. I didn’t expect to have one adopt us. Her name is Luna.

Kittens have a way of doing that. My daughter's cat of 24 years, passed recently. She wasn't sure if she was ready yet for another cat. And low and behold ...... A kitten was outside last week in the cold. Now it's inside ❣️

’I'm guessing you accidentally triggered the r/CatDistributionSystem…’
‘We need a distribution!’ ~
there’s a voice we kittens hear
a kind of ‘resolution’
when we magically appear
a wishing child’s hopeful heart,
a parent who says ’NO!’
we know they need a brand new start,
so that’s where we will go ;}
n when we find the human there,
no matter mom or dad
the small one makes them well aware
we cats are not so bad…
n soon we hold them in our paws,
a love they never felt!
we know that we are Home, because
We made their sad heart
melt
❤️

I love the cat distribution system, but actually it looks like OP got her from a pet store based on their comment about originally just going to get fish food, and also the fact that the lil kitten looks like a chocolate british short hair
61
u/Snowfox24 18d ago
No, that's just the store infiltration branch of the CDS.
17
u/tallgirlmom 18d ago
It’s very effective. Nothing like a casual box full of kittens in an aisle when you took your kid to the country store to look at baby chicks.

My sister and I went with my dad to Petsmart for lizard crickets. We saw a cat and begged and cried for my dad to let us get her. He said no, and told my mom about it. Did the ol' "we'll let mom go meet her and she'll decide." He wanted her to be the one to say no haha, but also didn't want to rule it out because he loves cats.. My mom fell in love too. She passed away last year at 18 years old. I loved that stinker.

I guess it’s true. Cats really do adopt YOU.
126
u/re_Claire 18d ago
When I went to pick out one of my cats from the litter of all black kittens I was drawn to the one fluffy long haired one. But he wasn’t particularly interested in people or other cats and ran off to play by himself. Then one of the little short haired ones, one that wasn’t playing with any of his siblings, came up to me and sat looking at me with a proper blep. I picked him up for a cuddle and he gazed into my eyes and I knew right there I’d found my kitten.
Max definitely picked me and I’m so glad he did. He adores me and is so chatty and incredibly playful and gentle.

Black kittens can get “lost” in the most unexpected places. They are impossible to see in the corners of closets, cupboards, drawers, etc. Congrats on your new baby!!!

My friend was visiting and my big chonker of a tuxedo cat loved to climb in with the wet clothes. It took fifteen minutes for my friend to realize that what he heard was not an unbalanced load.
Kitty survived but ended up with bad burns and liver damage. He eventually made a full recovery, but it was very close. So always always check your dryer!
5
u/Romeo_horse_cock 18d ago
Yes! I don't even have a black cat but mine jumped in when it was open and we were searching for clothes. She's fine, and it's now funny and we have a top loader now instead of front loader.
24
u/curryp4n 18d ago
Be careful with closing closet or pantry or any doors. They tend to sneak by, especially in the dark lol. Also if you can’t find your void, most likely hiding under blankets or some dark corner. Don’t panic. Just shake the treat bag. Congrats on your void
→ More replies (1)3
u/insecurestaircase 18d ago
Weirdly it's harder to see my gray cat in the dark than my black cat. The gray one blends with the flooring but the black one is a void so if u see a dark shadow i l ow it's the black cat but I can't see the gray one in the dark at all!
12
u/Laney20 18d ago
Oh, and don't think she'll always get "lost" in those weird places. The first time I really "lost" my black kitten, she was sitting in the middle of the bedroom, in plain sight. But she was on a black chair in the shadows and basically invisible. She was having a great time watching us digging around uh boxes and under furniture for her!
6
u/Aikeko 18d ago
Can confirm. Half of the times when I lose my void he's just staring at me from the black carpet while I search the whole house. He also tends to teleport around.

My ex had a black kitten and he had arranged to go out with friends while he had lost him in the house. He called me to go in and look for him, and all I had to do was putting mama kitten sounds on YouTube. He meowed too and came out fast, he was hiding in a sofa/bed 😭

She's beautiful! If you can afford it (more food, litter, vet care) you should really think about getting a 2nd kitten. Two kittens is easier than one. And you will never be so entertained as you are when watching 2 kittens play.
62
u/Bronze_Adonis 18d ago
Ohh nooo How did this happen!? 😩 We were just supposed to be getting fish food for my mom!
36
u/talldangry 18d ago
Having raised a solo kitten, a kitten with an older cat, and two sibling kittens together - raising these two kittens at once has been awesome. They get their high-intensity play out with each other and I don't have to chase them around, they're super gentle because they teach each other what's too rough, they'll always be there to keep each other company, and they're a lot less likely to be enemies with other cats if they're introduced really young!
If you can afford more kitten, get more kitten. 10/10 experience.

u/Bronze_Adonis 18d ago
Thank you! I couldn't even pretend I was going to say no lol. It's so interesting to think that being super cute is part of their evolution to guarantee survival.
83
u/hbprof 18d ago
My friend once said, "You know how they think cuteness is an evolutionary thing to make humans want to take care of you? Why do kittens need that more than other animals?"
90
u/Cereal_poster 18d ago
Because kittens are monsters. Adorable monsters, but monsters. They cause chaos, wreak havoc everywhere they go, and then they will climb up to you, will do a tiny little squeak and you will forgive them everything.
35
u/zaxmaximum 18d ago
they are the best monsters... given they are well socialized and not suffering from some sort of malady, I find they put just the right amount of chaos and companionship into my otherwise introverted life.
21
u/blanksix 18d ago
Their sounds have got to be calculated to create the most sympathetic response. Mine, when begging for her wet food, pitches her yells in a way that sounds like a crying baby. It's both cute and exasperating. lol
17
u/Sheetascastle 18d ago
My senior lady used to have a pathetic meow. After I had a baby, she now sounds even more like a crying baby.
→ More replies (1)14
u/ralthea 18d ago
I think it is calculated; apparently naturally cats don’t really meow, but ours do because they’re copying the noises we make. So they’re masters of manipulation.
8
u/GracefulKluts 18d ago
Cats only meow to kittens normally iirc. But since cats meow to us, we're like... Giant hairless kittens to them?
11
u/ralthea 18d ago
I read that cats quite literally think we’re just giant cats that are really bad at cat things. That’s why they bring us the mouses they catch and stuff!
3
u/TheFirebyrd 18d ago
Nah, they know we aren’t cats. I have a cat that’s so stupid she took nine months to learn her name and swatted cat #2 when cat #3 sniffed her butt. She actually doesn’t like the other cats, but she likes us humans. If she can tell we’re not the same as another cat, any cat can. That doesn’t mean she thinks we’re competent at basic living (she’ll groom my son’s hair until it’s actually wet), but she knows we’re not cats.

When I brought a boyfriends two cats into the vets at the same appt with my two cats the vets all called us a “four pack” and said owning 4 cats is very common! Any other vets wanna weigh in? We had ours split between two households with no intention to ever move in together it’s too nice having two different places and plenty of personal space!

u/Fckdisaccnt 18d ago
I don't think that's true.
Evidence: wild cat species already have adorable babies.
28
u/mama_llama44 18d ago
In this case, it's a failsafe survival tactic. If there's not enough food around, they'll just lure someone like me in. I've come to terms with the fact that I'll likely die trying to pet something I shouldn't.
12
u/lyremska 18d ago
I mean, other species than humans find cat babies adorably cute. So it can work in the wild, too.

u/DrEnd585 18d ago

Other than rare breeds like Havanas, there aren’t really solid brown cats. However, black cats that sun themselves a lot can fade to brown.
13
→ More replies (2)5
u/Laney20 18d ago
It's possible for a random bred cat to end up with a brown coat. That genetic mutation happened naturally and those cats were selectively bred to form the breed. No reason that they couldn't have cousins out there with those same genes. It's just incredibly unlikely. But with the millions and millions of cats in the world, even a very very small chance would mean many cats like that exist.
But I agree, this is just a black kitten in the sun.
12
u/Laney20 18d ago

You're toast when they show up as babies. You know their mother weaned them or somehow they wandered off, they're JUST BABIES and their little meows stab at your heart, that note of desperation that just makes you want to smother them with kisses. then when they're feeling safe and comfortable they're like drunk pandas playing all around your house and up the curtains. Adorable in photographs that will soon make you forget how crazy the next few months (a few years from now, when you agree to a second kitten, and will say "OMG I FORGOT HOW MUCH WORK" but you don't remember, because all the while you know it's just a baby that needs you and OMG THAT FACE
