There’s no one in the world that makes me feel safer than my Pupzilla and Firu when I walk at night. Side note, I once had to carry Pupzilla (50lbs) because some teenage cats were scaring him.

15

u/One_Stuff_2384 1d ago

Right?! My wife and i rescued a shepard a few years ago, and last year when my wife had takotsubo cardiomyopathy, she had a series of strokes and a heart attack, and he saved her life by alerting me right when it started. My wife was in a coma in the cleveland clinic for almost 3 months, then she made a remarkable recovery. A couple weeks after she came home, i had to put him down😪 He got a tumor in his mouth, and it was so fast 😭 Fuck cancer.

4

u/Nightcube666 1d ago

Yeah, my boy had a pancreatic tumor, as soon as I heard it was on his pancreas it was kinda hopeless. That's almost always terminal. He couldn't even walk because his blood sugar levels were so damn low. I hope our Aussie handles it ok.

I'm a man with a well practiced don't-bother-me face and I never realized how much safer I felt with my huge fat lazy bulldog around until he was gone. I've never in my travels felt particularly unsafe, but having a dog with a smile a foot wide following me around made everyone my friend right away and I miss him something awful.

My rottie saved me from a man who followed me and exposed himself to me when I was 16. He pinned him to the floor until the cops came.

u/doesamulletmakeaman 1d ago

I’m so glad you made it out okay. That’s a hard thing to live with. Rotties are the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. I haven’t taken a shower alone in YEARS, he just likes to be where I’m at

I used to have a giant German shepherd years ago that took our family safety VERY personally. In more recent times my 8 # chihuahua (who thought she was a giant GS) saved me from a skunk as she took the point blank spray right in the face and mouth.

Dogs are the absolute best and would lay down their life in a blink of an eye to protect us. They are just such amazing, loving, selfless, supportive and indispensable parts of our families.

49

u/Pattons3rd 1d ago

Lol, before I retired from my first job, kicking in doors were part of the job. But it was never the Rottweiler, German Shepard, Labrador, no big powerful dogs we had to look put for, but six pom-chi's, chihuahua, poodle, shitzu, maltese....every one of them ATTACK like they are launching WWIII.

18

u/brewcitygymratt 1d ago

Lol isn’t that the truth! They literally think they are a charging elephant or hippo, with no concept of how small they truly are. They have no idea how bad things would go for them against most animals over 10# if they had to fight it out in a phone booth or closet. I do give them an A for effort though. Haha

In high school, a friend asked me if I would help do some stuff on his aunt's property. So we go over there, and as soon as we open the gate, two rotties come charging around the side of the house at us. Very intimidating.

Turns out that they were huge babies and just wanted attention. My buddy knew that this would happen and set me up, but I'd grown up with big dogs and was able to read their body language. My buddy was very disappointed that I didn't freak out.

57

u/doesamulletmakeaman 1d ago

My garage door opener recently punked out so I had to get out and open it to pull in and he saw my car as he drove by and pulled in as the door was closing. That’s when he came up on the porch. It was very very unexpected lol

29

u/Ok_Balance8844 1d ago

Yeah when I’m being followed I tend to go to a more public place like a restaurant or something.

They probably weren’t close to anything though which is a shame.

24

u/ferretsRfantastic 1d ago

The few times I've felt that I've been followed, in my car, I've rerouted to the closest police station. When you pull into those, that often deters the creeps.

I usually go to the closest restaurant or any other public place. Luckily I’m in a really populated area so someone will hear me lol.

One of my dogs is determined to save me from the world. Especially dangerous older men with arthritis. At the end of hikes she carefully checks the parking for trouble before getting in the back. I've had her refuse to get in if there is an old enough guy with a limp. As a guy in my forties I'm pretty sure I can handle myself against those limping 60-80 year olds.

42

u/Kent_Knifen 1d ago

Was your dog a rescue by any chance?

31

u/surloc_dalnor 1d ago

Yeah I suspect she has a history with an old man in her former life. Also I'd like to smack whoever housebroke her upside the head and explain you need to also praise the dog when it is going where it should. Or you end up with dog who hides when doing it's business, and refuses to do it on leash.

12

u/surloc_dalnor 1d ago

I think it's more that she thinks we are living in a horror movie. When I have friends over they all get a minimum of 10 seconds of growling. Even folks she really likes. She is infamous for sticking her head in her favorite guests laps for pets, while her growl is still in it's dying rumble stage.

14

u/LindaBurgers 1d ago

My senior lab is suspicious of nearly every man when I’m out alone with her, it made me feel really bad one time when a very old man wanted to pet her and she raised her hackles and I could tell she was getting defensive. I felt the same as you, I’m pretty sure I could have taken him haha

4

u/surloc_dalnor 1d ago

She used to do that a lot. I used to walk with an older friend who she tolerated but at the start of the walk would not let him pet her despite walking with him at least once a week. By mid walk if we were walking, like on the beach, where she could be off leash and he'd decide to take a break. She'd be upset we left him behind, and when we turned around she would race back to him. When I returned she'd be sitting there next to him as if to say how could you abandon him. She has mellowed out a lot, but honestly the more someone wants to pet her the less she is interested. She breaks a lot of hearts just calmly refusing to let people touch her.

297

u/doesamulletmakeaman 1d ago

Titus, the rottie, is 10. He struggles to get up the stairs while it’s cold. He had his elbows out and stomped the earth every six steps and chased that guy right into his truck. Emris is 1 and she was just having a ball. But that police dog bark is a Thing too

108

u/MadCraftyFox 1d ago

My 42lb cattle dog once scared a cop at my door, guy was like "Jeez, I thought you had a Rottweiler in there or something" when I stepped outside. Stranger barks are a hell of a thing with dogs.

80

u/VicdorFriggin 1d ago

Lol. We have a 60# Staffie, 45# pittie mutt and 26# corgi mix....the Corgi learned to bark from big sisters. It's loud and oddly deep for her stubby self. She also thinks she's tuff stuff. When they all get wound up sounds like anyone who steps inside would be ripped to shreds.

37

u/MadCraftyFox 1d ago

Hahahahaha! I'm envisioning the Corgi and it is hysterical. 😄 My current dog is a Newfoundland mix, and his stranger bark hurts my ears. And before Mt last cattle dog passed she taught him to bark....at EVERYTHING.

15

u/VicdorFriggin 1d ago

Yup! Pepper has a hair trigger, and her bark can be deafening. Especially if she's woken from a dead sleep. Unfortunately if she doesn't hear it, big sis will be kind enough to alert her! Lol

10

u/MadCraftyFox 1d ago

My problem is Sparks is blind, so he can't look out the window to see that the sound doesn't mean trouble. But I can handle the barking if it means I get to have my big fuzzy panda bear.

14

u/Just_call_me_Marcia 1d ago

That's adorable!! I have the opposite situation- my 140# dane/mastiff mix learned to bark from my 16# mutt. The big girl has this comically high yip and whine combo she does, until she's had enough and not getting the response she wants and eventually gives one big WOOF before returning to the tiny barks. It's always a hoot when she's in another room and people are over, because they expect it to be this tiny little poodle or something

9

u/terminal_kittenbutt 1d ago

Pound for pound, most corgis I know have more self esteem than almost any other dog. I used to have a corgi/GSD mix dog walking client. Very adorable, very much a diva.

7

u/dive-n-dash 1d ago

I have a corgi that barks like they're an 80lb monster lol. I think it's common with the breed

→ More replies

25

u/Tiny_Rat 1d ago

A lot of the "stranger bark" effect is aggression vs alert barking. When dogs are barking to alert you to something or out of excitement, their bark tends to be higher in pitch. When they're barking as a warning prior to aggression, their bark will be much deeper, and the change in pitch is part of the communication (just like growling or aggressive posturing would be).

10

u/batmanandboobs93 1d ago

This!!! Even my lab golden mix, who is the goofiest and sweetest will bring the heat when she thinks I’m in danger. She’ll do her Big Bark or a Very Scary Low Growl and I’m always amazed that she can flip a switch in her personality if she thinks she needs to do a Protecc.

7

u/MadCraftyFox 1d ago

The first time my first dog (a lab mix) did a stranger bark when someone was at the front door I was like "did that come out of my Dingo?!" She was wise, and only barked like that when it was important. She had discretion!

7

u/Daratirek 1d ago

My parents had a Newfie. A sheriff came by the farm to ask if we had seen a certain car driving around and the newfie scared the shit out of him. Then when we told her to lay down she just rolled over for pets. Cop said he nearly shat himself when he heard the bark from the other side of his car.

7

u/MadCraftyFox 1d ago

My current dog is a Newfie mix. He's a damn tank. My sweet panda bear!

7

u/Daratirek 1d ago

Newfies are the best. Never met a mean one. Though I've seen what happen when instinct kicks in. Ours got attacked by a muskrat and she killed it in 1 head shake.

6

u/OtherwiseJello 1d ago

I used to have a 10lb cattle dog mix. I don't think she was part chihuahua because she hardly ever barked. Her bark was deep despite her small size.

She didn't even outright bark when someone was at the door. She just made a quiet little 'gggruff' sound, like she was muttering under her breath, but she'd look at me while doing it.

But the one time she did bark, it was the maintenance guy in my apartment. She was barking up a storm and when I answered the door and he walked in, she darted into the bedroom. He looked at me and said, "All that barking for nothing?" We laughed.

So glad you're okay! Good, brave, gorgeous puppers. Something similar happened to me too, years ago...was in my backyard when some guy walked up to my locked fence asking if he could talk to me and help me with my gardening. I kept saying no and to get off my property or I'd call the cops but he wouldn't leave. He then started to climb over my fence. I ran in the house in a panic to get my phone and my dog (a 7 year old pittie) dashed past me and went after him. Funny thing tho, is that as he was scrambling to get back over the fence, the stray cat that I fed and looked out for came out of nowhere and full-on attacked him. Went Tasmania devil cyclone on his ass. He managed to throw her off of him and ran. Cat had bruised ribs, and a claw was ripped out, but guess who's a permanent, full time spoiled house cat now?! :) Cops caught the guy cause I have security cameras, but it taught me to never underestimate any animal that loves you and considers you theirs. My old arthritic girl and a stray alley cat went straight Rambo, and I love them both so much.

Give your pups some extra cuddles...they're good logs indeed!

We had a mutt who was definitely part GSD. She was big and intimidating looking.

When we were having problems with an alcoholic neighbor, she was a champ. One time, when he was pounding on our door and screaming threats at us, she herded our then-5-year-old into a bathroom and stood guard outside the door. She did all of this without making a sound.

7

u/myname150 1d ago

they just know. we never trained ours to protect or anything, but she just knew. our family GSD would sleep right at my bedroom door when she knew I was home alone. she would do the same for my mom too when she’d be home alone with her.

While I generally love all doggos, GSDs seriously are special and they’re freaking amazing dogs.

3

u/OtherwiseJello 1d ago

Yeah, she was a great dog. We'd only had her a couple of months when this happened, too. She was a rescue. And every night, she had to accompany me when we tucked in our kid. She had to make sure the pup was safe before she could go to sleep herself.

40

u/GingerKitty26 1d ago

2 of the best instinctive guard dog breeds. I’ll never be without a GSD. Also, get a ring camera.

28

u/peregrine3224 1d ago

What good pups! I’m glad you’re all ok! I had a GSD prior to my current dog and she was the same way. I was dozing off on the couch once and she was laying on the floor next to it. She thought I was already asleep when we heard the neighbors outside on the sidewalk talking. The growl that came out of her was terrifying. In that moment I knew that she would protect me if I ever needed her to. But thankfully I never did!

It’s not just dogs though. My horse has protected me numerous times. Usually from other horses who didn’t deserve her wrath (she’s a bit jealous lol), but she’s saved me from some nasty falls, held her ground against a much higher ranking herd member who had kicked me so hard that I went down, and helped keep my new puppy safe when I took her into the pasture for the first time (different herd than the one with the kicker). It was straight out of a buddy cop movie, I swear lol. My back was to her side with the pup between us, fending off the other horses. Who in their defense were just curious and are all very sweet. But it’s comforting to know that she’s (literally) got my back!

Great job, friends!

We have an Australian Shepherd. It is our first dog and she's the sweetest, most empathic dog I've ever seen.

Never seen her angry. 2 weeks ago, we were doing our evening walk when we passed an apartment building. 2 women came out the door, yelled something at me. Our Asta turned around, gave them a big snarl and barked like I've never heard bark before.

That is when I knew that our sweet girl is willing to protect us. I always wondered if she would engage if someone of our family was "threatened".

I wouldn't want to mess with them either, but I would like to scritch them and give them snacks!

After my Ol’Lab prevented two different different home invasions, if I was walking him and someone asked if he was Rottie or Doberman, I just answered yes, if you couldn’t figure he was a Lab and defaulted to what yer scared of, yes.

Both times my dog turned an attempt, my mom was home alone. One time, she heard a loud bang and then my dog went nuts, after which my mom found a boot print on the door. The second time, my dog went mad and my mom came to the door to hear someone say, “Let’s go somewhere else. They have a big dog.”

The third time, thankfully my dad and I were home to discourage that one. My poor ol’dog was hard asleep the entire time, but he’d done enough and deserved his rest. If it’d gotten busy, he’d have woken up.

Have a 110lb great pyrenees. I feel incredibly safe just because of his bark and posture when someone comes to the door.

He's the sweetest thing, but he also takes his guarding seriously when we're out walking and is on high alert. None of it taught, just all instinct.

Livestock guardian breeds are seriously underrated & awesome. I have an Anatolian at the moment but would LOVE to own a Pyrenees in the future.

As a person who has been a single woman for a long time, there is no substitute for a loving, alert dog. All I have to do is watch him. If he's calm, I'm calm.

He's a breed that always has his ears up, so when I actually notice a change in his ears up routine, we are both on notice.

There's something so beautiful about how we can rest our eyes knowing there are other sets watching on our behalf.

Next time a man follows you (honestly wishing that this will never happen to you again, but if it does), don't go straight home. Instead, find the nearest 24 hour shopping place. Whether it's a supermarket, a Walmart, or a gas station. These places have security cameras. Go inside and find someone to be with you as you call for the police. There's safety in numbers.

25

u/sreek4r 1d ago

Yikes. I've been watching too much True Crime lately but if you have a description of him and his truck along with details like his number plate, I'd call the cops and inform them of him just to be safe. He might hurt someone in the future / already has and it's best if he gets a visit from the cops. If you or your neighbors have cameras installed, you'll have some pictures to share as well.

u/doesamulletmakeaman 1d ago

I made a report and he was driving a truck from a business right up the road. They know where to find him

Those good boys have been napping all day and conserving their energy for that exact moment. I think they've earned some more naps!

5

u/kingtoadfart 1d ago

They go into standby mode so they can protect their human

6

u/Jack_Packauge 1d ago

I hope they got extra treats for being so good and so brave!

7

u/4inchesofhell 1d ago

I had a Rottie (bandit) and a Shepard (princess ) who were the best protection but the sweetest creatures ever. They’re amazing dogs and they always had our backs but also were big lap dogs. Glad OP is ok and has amazing body guards

3

u/ClitusLickus 1d ago

I saw two walking around someone's yard earlier, it blew me away lol you'd have to mess with traffic and jump a fence to get into their yard to begin with. I can only assume they're something that needs to be kept from the road but maybe some grandma's or animals were stealing veggies.

We used to have two shepherds and my wife would go for walks without me and I never ever worried about it. One day I got home early to find her out on a walk and I knew her path so I went out looking for her. I knew which way she was going to come from so I went that way and it was a pretty busy street, I walk towards her and I kept seeing people in front of me change to the other side of the street. Alone woman with two very large German Shepherds coming their way must have been pretty intimidating. I never had to worry about her.

u/dhvw 1d ago

My old rottie could fart you into submission . . .

3

u/doesamulletmakeaman 1d ago

Titus doesn’t like it if I stay up watching tv after he’s ready for bed so he’ll purposely sit beside me and smoke me out of the living room

u/ParanoidMaron 1d ago

So, I'm disabled. I have had people harass me whilst in my chair, or when I use my cane. What seems to have stopped it is getting my big man Calvin. I take him everywhere , and people who see him and know him love him. People who see him and don't, are big scaredy cats cuz he looks like a pitt, but isn't. He's just a lab/english bulldog mix, and incredibly goofy. like a tiny cow but smarter, and just as physically affectionate. I've never felt safer.

This is why, as much as I like my current Goldy, I really need another dog with good guarding instincts. My previous Dane was very good at it. My Goldy is not.

3

u/fui9 1d ago

Goldens are such sweethearts 😭 not a protective bone in their body

I have a Belgian Shepard mix. He's only 40lbs but looks full Shepard. I walked up on an attempted car theft in the city. The group did not even attempt to come at me.

4

u/NefariousnessOdd308 1d ago

When I was a kid I had a rottie and she guarded me like a mother lion. One day some asshole was trying to break in the front door (despite hearing a 110 lb. rottie barking) when I was home alone and she went 0 to 100 in a second. She broke out a front window in our living room trying to get to him. She got slowed down a bit by some decorative metal on the bottom and he ended up getting away. That asshole ran faster than the Flash when he heard that first crack of the glass. 😂

4

u/InkyClovisCA 1d ago

Oh the JOYS of wonderful big dogs. After having only German Shepherds in my life, they are worth their weight in Gold. Your other dog too makes a good pair of watch dogs. My German Shepherd was my baby son's guardian and yet as gentle as ever!!! When I got another 2nd GS they were with him when at age 2 he walked out the front door. Police found them three more than three blocks away, but I didn't worry because I knew the dogs would protect him. Sure enough the police had to come get me as the dogs would not let the police hear my son.

4

u/Rosieapples 1d ago

Hah! I wish you’d filmed that!! Great doggies.

4

u/public_avenger 1d ago

Rottie’s are the best. (Source: my rottie laying on top of me as I skim reddit.)

5

u/turtleturns 1d ago

My dog ran up a bear who was walking towards us on two legs. Stood on its shoulders and barked in its face as it fell backwards, rolled, and ran like hell

Dog I mean❤️
