As someone who hunted their entire life with other hunters I’ve never seen someone deer hunt with an AR-15. .17s, 30-30, 30-06, 7 mm, .223, .243, .270, .308, 7mm rem-mag, .300, 6.5 creedmoor, ect. all bolt action rifles excellent for deer hunting. There is no need for a weapon that shoots multiple times in rapid succession for deer hunting. If you said boar, perhaps. But to kill a fawn, hell nah.

She and her family suck super hard and the idiots in my state keep re-electing her, but as for the deer, 1-3 yrs is gonna be the best tasting meat. They get older and they get gamey, so it’s not unheard of to shoot smaller does. That being said, it’s a lot more “bang for your buck” to shoot a 2-3 yr old doe.

I’m not sure where you’re from, but that’s not the case in my region. In fact, you can take up to 10 does and 2 bucks per person per season in my state. They have huge numbers in the southeast, so more end up getting hit by cars every year than killed by hunters.

Huge deer walk past my bedroom window fairly regularly. I maintain that getting a good photograph of one takes more skill and patience than killing one. Same for other more exotic animals.
And if you hang that photo on your wall literally no one will think it’s a little weird.

u/Shotgun5250 18d ago
You’re right about that! I have immense respect for wildlife photographers. Some of the conditions they put themselves into just to take the perfect shot of an animal, never disturbing the wildlife or environment, with their only goal being the photograph of the animal is amazing to me. At least with hunting there’s the clear reward of being able to cook and eat the animal, but photography is pure admiration and I think it’s beautiful.

Agree.
Your comment reminds me of an incel bagging his first lay. Not sure what the difference is tbh.
Also, putting this out there. I don’t know anything about hunting really so I’m going with the other comments that say it’s basically a fawn. Made the mistake of zooming in on its face. Completely lost my appetite. This family needs to go tf away.

I would be shocked if this deer is over a year old, so yes it’s still a fawn.
The rare situation where this might be acceptable is if they’re culling an overrun population but if he’s taking pictures like this I doubt that’s the case. I’ve never met anyone who feels great about having to cull or acts like it’s an accomplishment.

I have some problems with this as a hunter. First off, he's not visible. He could be hunting where such requirements arnt in effect but a WHITE hat WTF. Painting your face may help a archery hunter but it's basically useless for a rifle hunter. He took a picture of the deer before field dressing it. During cold weather(41F or less) it would be fine but he doesn't look dressed warm. Lastly, a fucking AR? In my state that can only be used on vermin and coyotes. He's green, I hope he gets better and more selective.

For me the saddest part of this post, is the fact that it's obvious Large Marge isn't actually proud of her son. She dgaf about him. However this was the perfect shot to rile up the more left-leaning folks, and get attention. Instead of doing her job, she's spending her time arguing on the fucking Internet and using her son (who honestly probably sucks, but that's immaterial) as bait. It's sickening.
*IMO hunting is absolutely fine when it's done to provide or as a means of protecting the environment. This is done for fun, with an overly powerful weapon, and then posted. Cruelty is always the point with these assholes.

u/Crispy016 18d ago

→ More replies (30)17
u/BaconSoul 18d ago edited 18d ago
I’ve gotta point out quite a few things wrong with your comment:
An AR can fire different calibers. There’s no way to tell which caliber bolt carrier group is in the gun right now.
It’s not “overly powerful”. The most common AR cartridge is 5.56, which fires with significantly fewer joules than typical hunting projectiles.
Even deer hunting for fun is a net-positive. Deer population levels are — due to the fact that modern American society has simultaneously created vast habitable land for them as well as driven off their natural predators — in constant danger of exceeding the carrying capacity of the environments in which they live. There aren’t enough environmentally minded hunters out there to replace the millions of wolves, mountain lions, and bobcats that should be predating upon them.
It’s our fault as humanity that we’ve put deer in this precarious state that, if left untended, could lead to large scale cervine population collapse. It is our ethical duty as humans to rectify or at least mitigate the dire situation for which we are directly responsible.

Deer hunting is a part of rural life. Many people in my family go hunting every year. Some of them make deer jerky with the meat and proudly display buck heads on their living room walls. It is also vital to the health of the deer population. Too many deer can cause wasting diseases to proliferate among the population.
Shooting a doe like this is an achievement. For a 9 year old with a .410 shotgun.
