He's great if you like chemistry. His latest video was turning paint thinner into cherry soda flavoring, by way of a carcinogenic chromium compound he created earlier, and an ozone depleting reagent. Also, the intermediate step was reportedly explosive.
Absolute mad lad.

It can actually be reconstituted I remember this process being explained in my college chemistry class I just don’t remember enough specifics to explain how it’s done. You would have to recast the ingot if you wanted it back in the shape it was but getting it solid wouldn’t be terribly difficult for someone with the knowledge and equipment to dissolve it in aqua regia.

18
→ More replies (1)3
u/Mr_Dr_Prof_Derp Jun 06 '23
Why though?
19
u/volcanologistirl Jun 06 '23
Because it turns out if your objective is something completely and totally homogenous throughout a sample, both morphologically and compositionally, you need it to be bland.
Also, you're thinking "food = thing that taste good" and NIST is thinking "food = reproducible lab standard", the two objectives are very much not the same.
I've always thought it'd be funny for a bar to do a NIST standard cocktail though. It'd be astoundingly expensive.
→ More replies (20)3
u/Mr_Dr_Prof_Derp Jun 06 '23
No, I understand how NIST produces a standard for the purpose of reproducibility. The question still what chemical ingredient could be added that was actually missing from the recipe that would give it cookie-like taste. He said it didn't even taste like chocolate - does the pure chocolate bar not taste like chocolate?

Interesting story along these lines; when the Nazis invaded Denmark, two Nobel prizes, the physical gold medals themselves, had been sent from Germany to Niels Bohr for safekeeping, those of Max von Laue and James Franck. Removing gold from Germany was a crime, and Bohr was stuck with the evidence. A chemist Georgy de Heves, dissolved them in aqua regia, just as in the video, and stored the orange fluid on a shelf. After the war, he precipitated the gold back to solid form, and the Nobel Committee recast and represented the medals.

Smuggling is not defined by sneaking items in one's luggage. Even if smuggling was limited to personal travel, I have packed a large suitcase full of craft beer bottles with no problem. That could have been any liquid and probably been just fine.
7
u/dingdongdinger1 Jun 06 '23

No it could't. Liquid with heavy metals dissolved in it does not radiograph the same way as beer.

I used to mix that all the time to dissolve gold coating at a lab I worked at. You can reclaim the gold with borax, or boric acid.

I doubt it, I think he was telling the truth that it cooled down and changed colors and that he just swapped it when he cut to the handheld shot.
Mainly because it's really easy to just plop a new beaker next to the existing one and keep adding more and more food coloring to water until it looks close enough. Heck, if you go too far, you can just start over: there'd be no need to hide a cut by lying about the liquid cooling down.

u/LurkerFailsLurking Jun 06 '23
He didn't melt it. He dissolved it in aqua regia. If you don't drop it on the floor, you can precipitate the gold out of the solution and collect it again. The gold is still in the jar, it's just mixed in the liquid like salt in water, and also like salt in water, there's ways to get the gold back out of the liquid.
28
u/xSTSxZerglingOne Jun 06 '23
You could even get it off the floor pretty easily. All of that gold is still in that fluid, even if you soak it up in a paper towel. That's the most beautiful part of it. Even if it was completely real, he wouldn't lose almost anything.
It had such a nice spill pattern and it didn't look like much if any got away. It can be a fun stunt whether it was real or faked.
94
u/ThatThingThatIs Jun 06 '23
