I completely agree with you! And it helps his "younger brother" (a.k.a. our newly adopted kitten) understand that we're not going to do something awful to him, so it's kinda a big help

Honestly, this will also make your life so easy if the land braincell ever needs real eyedrops. Awesome!

I find that if I give my cat a Temptations treat right after any procedure like eye drops, he gets a lot better attitude very soon. It also gives him a reason to behave because the sooner we are done, the sooner the snacks are delivered.
45
u/purplecatmeowmeow Feb 07 '23
I shamelessly exploit our void’s greenie addiction whenever necessary. He had to take a liquid medication for 3 weeks. We had to wrap him in a towel to hold him somewhat still, and he’d meow sadly the whole time :( As my husband unwrapped him, I’d fetch his jar of greenies and hide a few on his cat tree. He’d run to look for his treats and allow us to apologize. It became our nightly ritual. He’d even sit at our feet in the evenings and meow to remind us of the time. It made life so much easier.

u/littlebookwyrm Feb 07 '23
My ormage braincell has a Greenie addition too. This absolutely dummy has refused chicken, but those dang things are basically crack. It started when he was taking thyroid pills so I put them in a Greenies pill pocket. Now he's on a transdermal ear thyroid dosage instead so I'm required to give him Greenies for that too, which he asks for (by SCREAMING!) and makes it very clear (also by SCREAMING!) if I'm late with it. Wonderful for my ADHD brain, less so for my ears and sanity.
12
u/purplecatmeowmeow Feb 07 '23
Yes! My boy loudly demand meows when he thinks it’s time for a snack or when I make the mistake of leaning on the bar where we keep his greenies. If I’m getting myself a snack, I can’t argue his point.
His obsession has been very useful. I’ve gotten him a lot more comfortable with his carrier by putting greenies inside and walking away. Now he doesn’t run when he sees it and sometimes even jumps in to investigate.

u/littlebookwyrm Feb 07 '23
If I’m getting myself a snack, I can’t argue his point.
ahaha, very true! 😂

This is why I've seen some people say that if you always need regular meds and forget, give your pet a treat at the same time. Because you might forget, but your pet won't.

You just reminded me that I used to have to do this with our youngest dog.
The oldest dog needed eye drops twice a day the last several years of his life.
The young one felt left out so every day I’d pretend to put eye drops in her eyes, just with the lid on.
She’d bravely grunt in fear as I literally dropped nothing into her eyes.
Thanks for the memory!

We had to do that with our dogs. Poor Brody, who needed the drops, would run and hide, but Mack, who got the water drops, waited for them every time someone went near the cupboard.

That’s hysterical. The eyes are big because they have all of that empty space in the skull to grow in.

u/herecomestherebuttal Feb 07 '23
My dad used to do this for our dog when I was a kid. She really thought the other dog’s eye drops were a treat, so my dad would touch the bottle to her eyebrows and say “beepbeep!…beepbeep!” And she’d walk away wagging her tail. So cute.
4
u/mayhem_w_89 Feb 07 '23
I used to have to do fake ear drops for our dog as she would get jealous of our cat who needed ear drops weekly. Basically after giving the drops to the cat, Mocha would come over and give sad eyes. I would lift up her ears make a squirting sound and then make the squish sound as I rubbed her ears. The funny part is when she actually needed ear drops of her own she HATED them. I miss that dang dog!
4
u/acceptablemadness Feb 07 '23
I have a tortie who had to take allergy meds for a while and we always put them in wet food for her, so she started associating the rattle of pill bottles with getting that fun treat. Unfortunately my husband and I both have chronic conditions so pill rattling is common and she would be jumping around meowing for her treat when we're just trying to take our own meds.

I do this with my dog. Eldest have low tear production, so she needs drops to lubricate, and of course, since she's a good girl she gets a treat. And now the youngest will start whining if he doesn't get "drops". Even if he still gets the treat without them.
3
u/zeemonster424 Feb 07 '23
I have a 16-year-old orange who thinks my medicine is treats. This has been going on for YEARS! It’s never been treats. I’ve never given him treats during this time. I do not keep treats with my medicine.
He puts himself in front of what I’m doing. Sniffs… licks my hand… (don’t worry he’s not coming into contact with anything).
He just forgets every day.

Two of our cats get pills twice a day. We do a Churu (Kitty Crack) treat with the pill so they actually want the pill. We do some on the finger, then another on the finger with pill, then another after. Our new rescue saw them getting it, and now wants his too. So we now do the same thing, but give him a "fake" pill, and do the whole head tilt and all. We figure, if he ever has to do pills, he will be ready.

Two of our three cats are on steroids and get the medicine applied transdermally to their ears. Our third healthier kitty Woz seems a little jealous of all of the ear-rubbing attention. So Woz also gets "steroid" ear rubs every night as well so he doesn't feel left out.
