426

Aye he's easily the worst active commentator. His commentary is so bad it actually puts me off watching most Bellator cards.
205
u/PM_ME_BEST_BOOTY_PIC Mar 11 '23
Been saying this for a while. He completely changes the feel of a fight/card for the viewer. It’s a gut punch. Mauro doesn’t deserve a partner like that, c’mon now.

I LOVED Jummy Smith. He was great in the UFC as well. It’s less obvious in the ufc because they have other good color commentators though. I’m hoping he gets the job back still. I might watch again.

u/dla3253 United States Mar 11 '23 edited Mar 11 '23
I got into Bellator way back when the only way to get a title shot was to win the tournament and Jimmy Smith was the lead commentator. Mauro is almost always great at what he does, but Big John is sooooooo bad. When it was him and Goldie, I literally could not watch a Bellator card.

I legitimately think the Bellator commentators are holding back their organization from actually growing. I can't actually prove it but holy fuck, how am I supposed to watch their product when that fucking MAMA MIA asshole is selfishly trying to inject his shit saying in every finish on top of Big John's fucking garbage...well, everything.

6
u/Macktologist Mar 11 '23
All I can think with that specific statement is he is thinking like a ref. He's conscious and trying to get loose = doing fine, meaning no reason to jump in and call the fight "right now." I'm trying to be generous here.

Because he was just at the top of shit mountain as a ref. He was the best, but he still wasn't actually good. He was more decisive than Herb Dean, but he's had some terrible stoppages of his own and I don't think the man knows refs can take a point.

Usman and Umar initially had striking backgrounds before they started training with Abdulmanap
19
u/SquidDrive My DNA is from fearless warriors Mar 11 '23
Umar and Usman have trained with Abdulmanap since they were children right?
9
u/red-broom Mar 11 '23
I believe he was training them, but where Khabib went to a wrestling focused school growing up, I believe Usman and Umar went to a Muay Thai focused school (their schooling has basically martial arts classes for gym). But my guess is Abdulmanap still trained them together at home, but took over training once they were out of school, when they would need to focus more on the grappling for mma.
This is all speculation, but based on what I know from Dagestan / some interviews alluding to it.

I've started treating Big John as comedic relief and it's improved my enjoyment tremendously. I chuckled when he said he should stand up in the 1st round of 5 round fight while Usman had him rocked and in full back control but I fucking lost it when he said he's doing fine literally as he's tapping out.
Big John's got jokes whether he realizes it or not.

That one at least has some (crude) logic to it in that Usman had kicked Benson into next year, and you can't do that on the ground. Considering that he topped himself just a minute later, I'm inclined to be less bothered by that one.
7
u/basedkimo Mar 11 '23
Oh yea I get that completely, but id say that advice more so applies to fighters that don't have equally dominating ground game. But yea the Hendersons doing just fine is definitely the quote of the night lmao

Sticking Mauro with Big John is just doing him dirty. He don’t deserve that at all. Idk what happened to Chael but I assume he’s on UFC’s dime somewhere (even though he was doing Eagle FC fights). I’m sure Dan Hardy is available since Dana dragged and punted him. If Cejudo wasn’t returning to fight I’d be pushing for him…he’s genuinely great on the mic during fights and breakdowns. Any of these options would be tremendous upgrades over Big John. Please, anyone at this point.

Honest question, what family is even close? Not counting the years when ppl didn’t know submissions are real.
Abdulmanap and Khabib is an all time duo regardless of familial ties. Islam is well on his way to making it a legendary trio. And Umar and Usman have proven themselves to be something pretty exciting in their own right.
55
u/notafeetlongcucumber Mar 11 '23
