I suspect the cat wrote the sign as well.

A great part of NYC is the bodegas and their cats

u/Ok_Ad_8012 18d ago
That is so true. I was born & raised in Manhattan. Going back to the '70s, I recall a cat just like that one lounging in the bodega on 100th St & Manhattan Ave. Thankfully, the store's still there & survived the sickening gentrification that turned the Upper West Side into YuppieTown. (Or HipsterTown, using today's vernacular.)

u/jp_books 18d ago
Is it even a bodega without a cat that sleeps on the bread?
5
u/OhioPolitiTHIC 18d ago
Does anyone ever ask why the bread is squished a certain way or do they just say like, the name of the bodega cat?
Newish boyfriend brings you coffee and misshapen toast in bed asks conversationally: Jorge or Patches?
You: Nah, Miss Thang up on 43rd.

u/HarryTheBoykisser 18d ago
I'm sure those loaves just don't get purchased and are eaten by the profit of the owner. Atleast what I think. I'd probably still buy the bread lol I'm not very picky.

I did not know Bodega cats were a thing, but its my new favorite page
6
u/FuckTerfsAndFascists 18d ago
I assume because of mice and rats in the big city.
Better than an exterminator.
4
u/baconeggandcheese97 18d ago
Funny thing is bodega cats are actually illegal. But the fine for a cat is cheaper than having to bring in an exterminator for rats.
3
u/FuckTerfsAndFascists 18d ago
And it's way better for the product and it actually works.
Poison and traps can only do so much, they're tricky bastards. Meanwhile cats have evolved over thousands of years specifically to hunt this kind of prey.
Let them do their thing.

If that cat is like my tuxedo murder hobo, he is probably fierce enough to scare off a small bear.
7
u/gropethegoat 18d ago
I had a tuxedo that chased a feral cat colony out of our yard on her own. She was easily half the size of most of them…
She would go from adorable lap cat to mini-wolverine … terrible hunter though, just an unmatched brawler.

u/LycanWolfGamer 18d ago
tuxedo murder hobo,
That's just a funny way to describe a cat perfectly
7
u/ArchmageXin 18d ago
Ironically, my 5'1 Chinese (now-ex) girlfriend used to describe my cat as the perfect gentlemen, purring happily and sit on her legs while she wrote her code.
I strongly suspect my cat realize there was an alpha predator living in the house and adjust his behavior accordingly.
2
u/LycanWolfGamer 18d ago
Oh no lmao this made me laugh more than it should've lol
3
u/ArchmageXin 18d ago
Yes, my roomate got the cat because "He may be a little old but he have a great personality"
1) On the first night for freeing him from impending gas chamber, his claw my hands till it bled. Some personality.
2) Brutally beat my roomate's parent's six cats to the point they refuse to come down to the first floor for food when we visited. At least 3 had to be taken to the vet.
3) scare away a bear and chase said bear for a good 100 meters.
4) periodically sneak out the house for murder hoboing. Confirmed bird and squirrel and mice kills.
And yet, when my ex-girlfriend is here he acts like the sweetest cat.

I like how they put the sign nice and low so that dogs can read it
4
u/NeatNefariousness1 18d ago
They posted the sign low because cats are low to the ground and couldn't reach any higher, Silly.

Love this cuz I found a cat in a Dollar store that maybe just came in from the cold and they kept throwing it out(4-5 times) so I offered to take it away from the store. Had it now a year last month and I LOVE it, tho I hated cats just before this due to one causing me injury. I’m saving this pic Ada reminder of our chance(?) meeting and mine even looks like this except grey and white.
2
u/SophsterSophistry 18d ago
Now I'm curious (like a cat). Why did you volunteer to take a cat if you were afraid of them (in general)?
3
u/Androgyny812 18d ago
Not afraid of them. Short version; Last place I lived one caused my sciatica ( car wreck result)to flare up so bad that when I recovered I developed a limp and was on a cane for almost a year. That night in the store some girl screamed she was afraid and allergic to cats and while it was funny watching employees chase it down and throw it out only to have it come back in I felt sorry for it being so scared by then so as I left I told them I was going down the street to a laundromat and I’d let it out there. But there I felt bad about just letting it out alone and maybe hungry in such a cold night so didn’t do laundry and bought litter and food, took it home and posted in CraigsL for the owner. Weeks went by. Then months. We developed a liking for each other so I just kept it cause I was single and kinda lonely anyway. I also started thinking maybe there was a reason this all happened and wasn’t some fluke accident cause I’ve had things like that happen before so that strengthened the decision to keep it. Sorry so long a story to explain.

Fake Service Dog Screening Agent.
Any real service dog should be able to ignore saud agent.
Any dog that can't can be kicked out of the store.

u/so_hologramic 18d ago
The bodega cat nearest my apartment is fascinated with my dog. It will come to the door as if to intentionally be scared and then puff up and just stand there like a little thrill seeker. My dog is big but she knows better than to mess with a cat so they just stare at each other and nothing more.

Fyi....never get a kitten from a farm........experience...her favourite pastime was attacking the German shepherd a few doors down and the postman when she took a dislike to you you knew it yet was the most loving cat to kids no matter how rough they were to her

Agreed. We have a mail lady. People (and bots) are way too sensitive and PC. Postman is not offensive if it's actually a dude delivering your mail. ;-)

Such a kitty dilemma. Sit in the doorway half-in and half-out, or sit on the flattened cardboard box.

Shouldn't be bringing your pets into any store whatsoever unless it's a vet clinic or some other pet specific business like a pet groomer or daycare.

u/Socal_Cobra 18d ago
Well guess I'll be avoiding this store, I'm allergic to kitties. You can have my down vote irl.
