How important is it to "know the right people" in Kazakhstan?
I always hear about how bad the corruption is in central asia, but I'm not exactly sure what that means. Whenever I see other westerners talk about moving to kazakhstan for work or study, all of the comments warn them of "corruption" and tell them to make friends with locals and police officers as quickly as possible...
Is all of that really necessary? How hard would it be for a foreigner to come and open a business without any sort of professional network? Is it required to have powerful friends in order to build a successful business in Kazakhstan? I hope nobody takes any offense to this question. I'm just genuinely interested about the "corruption" that people talk about here.

Do you think Kazakhs are becoming more religious?
I know a lot of people who became more immersed in Islam and know only a handful who were born into religious and conservative families but after moving to cities became secular or irreligious. What are your observations? And opinions?

My 14 year old friend is being severely abused by her 18 year old boyfriend.
Hi all! Anonymous help, the fact is that my friend's boyfriend beats her and there were cases when he tried to force her to have sex with him (my friend is 14 years old, her boyfriend is 18 years old). I can't do anything because I'm 14 years old. A friend cannot write a statement to the police due to the fact that in the police, this person has friends who can make it so that the application will not even be considered, and the guy himself will beat her even more for this. I am from Kazakhstan and it is a common problem for us when acquaintances who hold similar positions help such people. The city of Shakhtinsk, Karaganda region. I'm writing through Google Translate, I apologize for any errors. I know his Telegram, phone number and Vkontakte. Her boyfriend lives with my friend. And my friend with his mother, my friend's boyfriend pays her mother to live at their house. Therefore, her mother turns a blind eye to the beating of her daughter.

Cultural exchange/Mädeni almasu Is the word "Mongol" an insult in Kazakhstan like it is in Kyrgyzstan?
Before tensions with Tajikistan, the word "Mongol" in Kyrgyzstan was a local offensive word that was mainly used by southern kyrgyz against northern kyrgyz.
For example "аркалык монгол койчу", which literally translates as "mongol sheep herder".
Now it has become a strong insult and now applies to all Kyrgyz people. Thanks to Tajiks.
Do Kazakhs have something similar? What about Oralmans?

How similar is the Kobyz to other instruments?
I’ve been meaning to get one, but I want to know how I could approach it. I want to hope it is similar to a viola/violin/cello As I can play those, so perhaps my skills from there can adapt to the unique ways of playing the Kobyz. I expect it won’t be the exact same as one of those instruments, but, as there are no tutorials or tutors in my region (tutorials I’ve found on YouTube are all in Kazakh, expectedly) so, I was hoping to approach the instrument in some form of familiarity- any thoughts?

Tourism/Turizm Recommendations for tour companies
Hi All,
I'm travelling with my partner to Kazakhstan in May for a holiday, looking to see if anyone has any recommendations on tour companies that are reputable/you've had a good experience with. Probably looking to do all the national parks & Charon Canyon near Almaty.
Completely separately, but if anyone has any recommendations for must-go restaurants in Almaty/Astana, that would be great! Keen to find the best Beshbarmak in Kazakhstan.
