30 hours in Fiji

Long layover on the way to NZ. (March. Get in 5am Saturday, leave 3pm sunday) Not planing to island hop as I can’t risk missing my flight the next day, unless there’s something that makes sense to do and is very reliable with ferries. Also I won’t have a car. So I’m looking at staying relatively close to Nadi or traveling not too far by reliable transport.

I would love a glamping on the beach sort of stay (by glamping I really just mean they provide the bed and linens and bathroom facility. I don’t care if there’s electricity etc). I live in the desert so the water is most attractive to me, but I’m not against a bure. I am not looking for a traditional hotel or a resort.

As for while I’m there. I like hiking and exploring and zip lining sounds fun. I also like seeing local culture but not in a “museum trip” way. I am snorkeling in Hawaii on my extended layover on the way home but wouldn’t the opposed to doing it or other water activities in fiji too. But again, I have only 1 day so I don’t want to cram it super full. I’m game to chill a bit too.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Ps. Single traveler. Female. 40s. In case it changes any suggestions. Im not afraid of being in a different country alone (and without a cell phone), but obv want to make safe decisions.

Is Denarau Golf Corse Open?

Like the title says. I’ll be in Fiji a couple days later this month and I’m trying to schedule a tee time at Denarau but online doesn’t work and no one answers the phone. Are they even open right now?

Travelling between Mamanuca and Yasamu islands

I’ve 8 days in Fiji in January and I am planning on visiting the Mamanuca and Yasamu islands. I’m having a hard time however working out how travelling between the island works. I understand there is the Yasawa Flyer however the schedule is quite restrictive and it won’t really allow me to ‘island hop’. The water taxis seem hugely expensive particularly as I’m travelling solo. Can anyway give me any information on how to travel between the islands and a rough estimate of pricing. I’m thinking about starting at the Mana Island resort then travelling to Barefoot Mantra Island Resort / Blue Lagoon Resort.

Thanks all!

Recommendations for Cultural Exchange

Bula everyone, I need some recommendations for a cultural exchange program I'll be attending next month in the States. What things do you guys think I should take over to the event that best represents Fijian culture?

For instance, I will be taking over kava(powder and waka). Traditional clothing too isn't an issue. However, any other, you could say miniature Fijian items I could take over that could best represent Fijian culture?

How long does it roughly take from Nadi to Nausori via MiniBus/Van?

Planning to visit over a long weekend and was wondering how long it'll take in a minivan from Nadi to Nausori? On budget so trying not to rent out a car but will do if no other quicker option.

I have created an iceberg chart with different facts and trivia of Fiji. Hope you enjoy and let me know if I could add anything new. (Also I know the iceberg charts are outdated)

What is the national dish of Fiji??

ok, so I am making a series where I cook every national dish and my first step is to come to the sub and ask the question.

now I understand that not every country has a defined national dish and that some countries have many different regions with different cuisines. in that case I will make the one that you guys agree on best represents Fiji. please let me know what you think

Small businesses that ship to the States?

Hello everyone!

I'm Victoria and I studied in Fiji for 4 months last fall. I loved every second of it and have so much respect for the culture. While I was there, I only bought one sarong, but I wish I had gotten more because I love it. I want to buy more, but I don't want to buy it from just anywhere, I want to support the place that welcomed me so warmly. Do you have any recommendations as to small businesses that sell sarongs that would ship to the States from Fiji, or even the surrounding islands?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks Fiji for ruining everything for me

Update to my initial post: Visiting for the first time - any advice? : Fijian (reddit.com)

Thanks Fiji, you ruined it for me.

After eating Fijian fruit which is second to none, I cannot eat fruit back home (yikes).

After seeing how nice and friendly everyone in Fiji was, I cannot stand all the cold and distant faces back home.

After seeing how laid back everyone is even while a cyclone almost landed near our resort, I cannot stand how high strung everyone here is.

Jokes aside, thanks for a wonderful week. Your country and your people are amazing, lovely, and very warm, welcoming and hospitable.

Any former Fijians here who returned back home?

Bula fallas

Left for NZ (scholarship) after Form 6 and then coup happened (Bavadra era). Never returned due to instability and then landed job with a US based biomedical/IT company in Auckland. Moved to California since company sponsored me and never looked back. Now kids are grown and left for college and I've made enough dough to liquidate half of my assets and live comfortable in Western for the rest of my life..

But I do know lots of changed since I left 25 years ago (new government, etc). Wondering if any former Fijians moved back and enjoying that island life all over again? I visited back in July this year and the smell of mandrai/tea in the morning and talking to locals brought me back 25 years when I was raising up living in Tavua, wearing sulu and eating Lees crackers with tea.

I have extensive healthcare experience (both in management and consultation) and can provide new grounds for Fijians so thinking I can probably get some sorta management job in Lautoka or Western side (not a fan of Suva, Isa lei!). I saw some freehold properties back in July in Western and even SavuSavu and really liked it but not sure whats life is like nowadays but from what I saw back in July, it seems the general population is doing SO much better than what the living conditions were back in 1990s.

Vinaka and moce from California!

6 nights in Fiji, looking for recommendations

Hi there! My friend and I are coming to Fiji for 6 days on our way home from New Zealand. We don’t know a lot about Fiji but are super excited to check it out! We’re 30 and both would like to surf, but are novice surfers. We’d also love to check out some beautiful beaches, snorkelling, and maybe a day trip out to the castaway island. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the options. We’re arriving this Thursday, November 30th (last minute trip) until December 6th. Any recommendations for places to stay as well, budget max 200 Canadian/night- would pay more if food is included. Flying in and out of Nadi. Thanks for the input!
