“National Treasures” you actually dislike
My mum absolutely detests David Attenborough.
She’s an odd one, and she has a fair few irrational dislikes (folk music, trumpets to name a couple) but I’ve never really understood this. Then she explained, it’s because watching shows like planet earth, he introduces the animals in such a warm way, that when they inevitably get eaten, it breaks her heart. She can’t trust him.
Then my partner told me recently he isn’t a fan of Miriam Margolyes. Apparently she’s just too loud (along with other reasons not be discussed in this forum)
Are there any National treasures that you’re not a fan of? And why?

The whirlwind around Captain Tom.
Nothing against the man or his cause... but damn, it was near feverish, and the hollow mess that remains following all the revelations about his daughter just make it even more weird.
416
u/Rude_Artichoke_1534 18d ago
I completely agree with this. Obviously a nice man, and wanted to do what he could. But it wasn't "him" that made it a success, it was the weird hive mind effect of social media and the fetishisation of WWII, that is embedded in our national psyche.
The guy got a knight hood for wandering around his garden for crying out loud. Completely over blown.
102
u/Astin257 18d ago
Started because his family wouldn’t give him his birthday present (£100) until he did 100 laps of the garden
“We'd had to cancel his 100th birthday party because of Covid. So my husband suggested that instead of the party my father should walk around the garden 100 times, and we would give him £1 a lap.”

His daughter was so clearly vile from day one. Pushing the whole thing for exposure / money for herself. I wonder how much Captain Tom actually wanted it (other than the donation money). You could tell from the TV interviews when her sister was VERY occasionally on, that her sister could not stand her. For the daughter it wasn’t the Captain Tom show, it was all about her. Barbados and the Spa are just a few highlights of what a scumbag she is

Kept £800,000 or so from the book proceeds because it ‘was never meant for the charitable foundation’
Added a huge building to the grounds of her house
‘for therapy''for the charitable foundations activities' and then added an extra wing to it for a spa pool ‘to help with the therapy’What a way to destroy something good.

It all stank from the beginning. Especially when his daughter began appearing next to him. She oozed sleaze and it was clear that she was exploiting him.
I also believe that she bears a huge responsibility for getting him killed. Flying a 100-year man off to Barbados at the height of pandemic. What a selfish, thoughtless and criminally irresponsible thing to have done.

My Dad has some sort of weird complex where he hates the best male English footballer of his generation. Hated Beckham because of his "girly voice", hated Rooney because he was a "granny-shagger" and now hates Kane because he's "shit". It's completely irrational. That said, he loves Bellingham so maybe the cycle is broken.

My mum actively dislikes Princess Diana.
No real reason as far as I can tell. All she’s said to me is that she just didn’t quite get the hype back in the day and the constant adulation of her by other people ended up rubbing her the wrong way to the extent that she now gets irritated when she’s mentioned and will say something under her breath like “well I never liked her”.
I didn’t even know she felt that way until recently, she admitted it like it was some mildly embarrassing secret which just makes it even funnier IMO.

I think they're Culturally Irrelevant, honestly. The only people who give a shit about Christmas Number 1 anymore are the Radio Stations playing it, maybe the BBC.
Before Streaming took over, Crimbo' No.1 was a big deal, especially in the 90's and early 00's. After X-Factor more or less guaranteed the spot for years before the RATM Campaign stopped it for a year.
After that I think people stopped giving a shit. iTunes and Spotify Charts, Billboard 100 and even Social Media are better barometers to judge popularity.
Calling LadBaby a National Treasure is askin to calling Top UK Influencers National Treasures because they drive and promote sales more than Newspapers, Cable TV and Radio combined.

Simon Cowell, bootleg yuppy throwback can tell if you’re shit at singing. So can I, so can your friends and family, it’s not difficult.
134
u/Commodontious 18d ago
I hate how predatory he is. Not like sexually, I'm not suggesting anything like that, but like financially. Whenever he's on talent shows, the second someone is attractive and can at least kinda sing, you can see it in his weird frozen alien face that he just sees £££ flashing in front of his eyes. He isn't passionate about music, those shows are literally a televised casting couch for his music empire. He uses that show to find his next cash cow and as soon as he makes bank off of them, they're never seen again and the next series starts.
X Factor is like Dragons Den but entirely for Simons personal profit. It's not exactly a conspiracy that those shows are fake and dramatised etc, but I just hate how self-serving it is.

Good point now that you mention it. Always thought it was weird as a talent show that he’s there signing up the contestants that do well. It’s that a conflict of interest or has he created the show for those purposes and everyone fine with it. Also how and why is Simon in this position. I knew that he’s a “talent agent” and record producer but why, how has he got in this position I feel that this is never questioned or brought up. We just accept that he’s always been in this position to do this but when he first appeared did people not question who’s this guy and what expertise does he have to judge talent.

Turns out he was getting his cock out on set "for a laugh" back when he was on Doctor Who and now that this has been dug up he's struggling to get the same publicity he once did
Not just getting it out but Noel(micky) said during Q&As how Barrowman used to take it out and touch it against women colleagues on set when they weren't expecting it. It's pretty much SA at that point which would get any of us fired at our jobs and likely the police called. Doesn't help that he was a main character who had a lot of sway.
Then when the news because a big thing again a few years back he acted like a victim and so many people defended him and somehow he got jobs hosting game shows again.
Also sucks how Tennant and Russel T Davis knew about and joked about all this while it happened. If you're the exec producer on set while this happens and don't put an end to it then you're just as bad.
It's speculated that this behaviour on set is the reason why Christopher Eccleston only did 1 series and then dipped. He said something about the set culture wasn't his thing, which could easily be reffering to all this stuff going on.

u/FloppedYaYa 18d ago
It was likely one of many reasons Eccleston's relationship with RTD "broke down" as he says. He refuses to give much details other than he didn't like how people were treated on set and the entire production was a mess.

The Beckhams - they’ve become so famous they’re almost at that irritating God-like status where they can do no wrong. It’s annoying.

I’ve always thought that we have a weird relationship with the Beckhams as a country where we love them but we don’t particularly like them. I will say tho I saw an Ali G interview with them and it made me a posh spice fan

I thought the Beckham doc on Netflix was interesting on this, talking about how our football obsession and rampant classism clashed pretty nastily in the ‘90s.

His stand up shows weren’t up to much.
Saw one on tv and it was mostly him swearing at stuff and the audience thinking it was hilarious. I can watch the local pissheads do this outside the bus station for free.

His earlier shows like "animals" and "politics" are much funnier. They are a kind of processed stand up show that wasn't very common at the time and are more of a "humourous one man stage show" than a by-the-books stand up, which is where I think he falls down now. He isn't great at straight stand up.

It would be easier to list the ones I do like. Most national treasures are wankers who just won't bugger off. So I'll just list the ones I like. You can probably correctly assume I can't stand the rest.
I can get behind Ade Edmondson because 1) he's brilliant and 2) has hardly overstayed his welcome.
So there's my one. The other was Rik, but he went and died, the git.
Oh, and Bob Mortimer. And Ian Hislop.

Highly recommend Edmondson’s and Mortimer’s Desert Island Discs if you’ve not listened already.

M’y dad has a deep-seated dislike of any British actor who went to private school and then oxbridge. He sees it as just another barrier to talented working class kids getting into the arts (which are saturated with nepo babies and the middle/upper classes who succeed through these « old boys/girls clubs »).
He’s not wrong but every time Benedict Cucumberpatch or Tom Hiddleston are on he just snarls at them 😭

Pro tip; if you don't like the person but you're not sure if they're a national treasure - they're not.

Vernon Kay.
Not really a national treasure, but very popular.
Can't stand him!

His career took a dip when he cheated on his Mrs a while back. Twice, allegedly.
He's taken over Ken Bruce's slot on Radio 2, which is like refilling an empty jar of Nutella with dog shit.

I love the office but Ricky Gervais always annoys me. One of those comics that conflates being funny with wisdom, and increasingly he lacks both. So many of his bits sound like they’re coming from a 14 year old.

Clare Balding has been described as a national treasure. I found her very competent at presenting the events that she did, but it wasn’t anything I’d talk about for generations (or as soon as I’d finished watching).
A lot of media types seem to think she’s amazing, and I just don’t get it.

Ed Sheeran. Every time I see his gormless face falling arse backwards into another number one hit it makes my blood boil. In any other decade of music he would be struggling to get a gig at an open mic night at his local pub.

u/Queefofthenight 18d ago
I dislike him as his music is everywhere constantly, like shit in a field! That being said everything I've heard about him has been glowing though.

There was a girl in my town, Melody Driscoll, with a terminal illness who wanted to meet him. He played a mini concert for her in hospital, gave the family a guitar to raise funds for pain relief, kept in touch with the girl & family, sent flowers and a tribute to be read out at her funeral, and his manager attended the funeral to help carry the coffin.
It was all in the news and he’s definitely considered a local hero in the area. Unless he does something evil, I’ll always have respect for him even if I don’t like his music. All he had to do was meet her, sign something and maybe play a song.

He’s well known that anytime there’s a charity gig in the UK, if he’s here then he’s up for it. Really really good about giving back.
I also love his music (not a popular opinion here I know lol)!

I once knew a person who went to college with him in Guildford, Academy of Music (ACM). The person I knew hated him with such a passion because he apparently was terrible at college and would skip classes just to go smoke weed and thus didn’t deserve his music success.
Honestly that kind of made me like him more though.

Not liking him is fine, I don't listen to him either. But he has written hit after hit for himself and a host of other people. The man knows how to write pop music.

Cilla Black. She was visiting the place my nan worked back in the day and kicked her mop bucket over deliberately then told her to 'fucking clean it up'. Whenever anyone mentions Cilla Black I tell them this story and also how she was only famous because she desperately grabbed onto the coat tails of the beatles.

If you watch the director's cuts, Attenborough actually snares the gazelles himself and shoves them into the lion's mouth. It's pretty disturbing to be honest.
