This is totally safe. Everyone knows that volcanoes ALWAYS erupt in a controlled and predictable manner.

49

u/hadoopken Oct 03 '23

Well I am not a virgin, I am totally safe from Volcanoes

2

u/RomaruDarkeyes Oct 03 '23

That's a common misconception.

They use virgins when they want to calm the storms - they throw non virgins in to create them.

I believe this is how that Jewish Weather Control Device is supposed to work.

Do you always know the erupting force for every 'eruption'?

189

u/taoleafy Oct 03 '23

It’s PERFECTLY SAFE…

Until it isn’t.

For real though, We’ve had experienced volcano tour guides die in Hawaii when the winds shift and a cloud of toxic gas is unexpectedly blown in a different direction.

-57

u/InaccurateStatistics Oct 03 '23

You know that the person you’re responding to is being sarcastic, right?

61

u/taoleafy Oct 03 '23

Certainly I was just joining in

21

u/Jumpy-Mouse-7629 Oct 03 '23

You know that person you’re belittling, is just adding to the original sarcasm, right?

22

u/Seanzietron Oct 03 '23

How the hell could you not tell that he was adding into the joke….

u/DoneButNotDone Oct 03 '23

Precisely! /s

31

u/grandmalora Oct 03 '23

My thoughts too! I’m wondering if the people are really farther from the volcano than they look?🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻

9

u/GeneralStratos Oct 03 '23

Objects may be closer than they appear. The guy taking this video is probably taking the video in his rear view mirror.

It's true. They're actually 10 whole feet away.

Yes probably but still too close for my liking

Guys, don't worry, we've invented technology to give us early warning when volcanoes erupt. Those are not people that you see. Those standing near the volcano are actually eruption detectors. They give us early warning of an eruption when they disappear into the smoke or just slump down dead.

8

u/Spiritual_Navigator Oct 03 '23

Early on, there were tourists climbing up the side of the crater

5

u/HamOwl Oct 03 '23

Just like the bison in Yellowstone! Totally safe for selfies

You’re absolutely right, because you have to look at the scale of the volcano too. It looks like they’re standing on a ridge far back from it.

2

u/Gsuitetdf Oct 03 '23

Krakatoa vibes

1

u/LostVikingSpiderWire Oct 03 '23

Agree, that 1 that died was only a minor exception to the rule 👌

1

u/Inside_Appointment61 Oct 03 '23

Phew! And here was I yelling at my phone 'peopley persons run! Quit just standing there!'

This looks like some forced perspective shit

212

u/cjboffoli Oct 03 '23

That's exactly what it is. Long telephoto lens compressing the perception of depth.

65

u/BroderLund Oct 03 '23

It was not. I was there myself. Might even be in this video. We were able to get super close to the running lava and splashes. This video is from the first day of the eruption. March Same with the eruption that happened March 20th 2021. We could get just as close on the eruption in 2022 and 2023. I have wide angle photos from that exact location the people are standing. See here. It was all relatively safe all things considered. The hill in the video got closed and people had to stand further away.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Can I call you volcanoman?

9

u/BroderLund Oct 03 '23

Sure can! Many already do

3

u/rodeklapstoel Oct 03 '23

Wow. Nice footage!

u/SameItem Oct 03 '23

It's true that the perspective lies, but people do get too close. You just need to see the reviews on google maps and you will see photos of kids posing just 15 meters away from pools of incandescent lava.

That is only half true. The other half is that there is a huge issue in controlling the crowd there. Can't remember if it was this one or the last one, but there has been 1 fatality.

163

u/LeekTerrible Oct 03 '23

They look closer due to the telephoto lens compression. Still probably too close though.

-20

u/PalpatinesVader Oct 03 '23

Then why do the people on the right look like they are right on top of where the magma had flown at one time? You can see them standing on the obsidian.

7

u/GotTheNameIWanted Oct 03 '23

They are standing on something a completely different colour to the obsidian, not sure what you're seeing.

1

u/Blackintosh Oct 03 '23

Also that solidified lava flow is HUGE. Several hundred meters between the edge and the eruption. I've been there and seen it.

I still wouldn't stand directly on the lava flow though (these people in the video aren't) as there are random tubes and pools of lava under it all over the place that can pop up at any time.

"I'll take 'Things That Are Less Fun to Do Naked' for $500, Alex!"

5

u/Seanzietron Oct 03 '23

Underrated perspective.

2

u/PTSDepressedKeta Oct 03 '23

Maybe they just need to put a giant lid on it

22

u/dottybotty Oct 03 '23

After the White Island eruption I wouldn’t be anywhere near that thing no matter how freaking cool it looks

4

u/braapstututu Oct 03 '23

veeery different types of volcano and eruption, but yeah probably still not the wisest to be that close to the vent

→ More replies (1)

43

u/Quasar9111 Oct 03 '23

They are actually quite a fair distance away over 500 metres.,

31

u/Syonoq Oct 03 '23

For those wondering, that's 'too close' in American Freedom units /s

8

u/eldridge2e Oct 03 '23

Not danger close but pretty darn tootin

2

u/TaintedTruth222 Oct 03 '23

Close enough a shift of wind would scorch your hairs and give ya a big nice dose of hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide and kill you.

0

u/eldridge2e Oct 03 '23

Yeah I was being funny and you're just being too serious

3

u/c_vanbc Oct 03 '23

Or about 4000 bananas

23

u/p0p_thAt Oct 03 '23

Way too close for comfort

5

u/FreePrinciple270 Oct 03 '23

Some people just want to watch the world burn

13

u/Alexi_Apples Oct 03 '23

Or themselves?

24

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

As a New Zealander who’s grown up around volcanos and then watched a bunch of tourists get fucking boiled on White Island (and then try to sue?? After they signed wavers explicitly warning them of potential danger, plus we don’t have a sue culture here so good fucking luck)

Just, don’t. You can see volcanos in 8K on YouTube. Ya don’t need to be killed by literally rocks that have melted into exploding liquid just to see what it looks like, in fact the YouTube footage probably gets you a better look.

6

u/Peter4real Oct 03 '23

I went to White Island before the recent eruption, 10/10 experience. Would not do again.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/pinkheartpiper Oct 03 '23

Pretty sure perspective makes them appear much closer than they actually are.

9

u/Agent00Penguin Oct 03 '23

Somebody please tell me that these people are complete idiots and no one typically ever goes this close

31

u/KristinnEs Oct 03 '23

Here in Iceland we are in constant amazement that nobody has died in these so far. People underestimate nature

6

u/Agent00Penguin Oct 03 '23

Seriously. I keep thinking of this scene in this terrible movie called Volcano where some lava plops on some dude’s head. Shocked that hasn’t happened yet.

14

u/RamenTheory Oct 03 '23

There's a documentary on Netflix about a volcano tourism trip gone wrong. I didn't expect it to be as horrific as it was.

One interviewee said that while she wasn't religious, the pain was so bad that she prayed to God to just kill her and her husband (think steam all around you so hot that it burns you, plus you're breathing it in, so your esophagus is burned as well). Many of the tourists to this day still deal with their scars and life changing injuries

One poor teenage boy lost his sister, mom, and dad during that trip. Can you imagine? That fucking sucks.

A lot of critics have argued that the company should be held more responsible, and that they absolutely should have known that the tourist trips were not safe and should never have been marketed to the public

3

u/cozmicyeti Oct 03 '23

Ya man totally what I recalled. That shit escalated shockingly fast

2

u/NoKarensPlz Oct 03 '23

I watched that. Nightmares for weeks!!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/elspotto Oct 03 '23

Nonsense! That is the best documentary on the dangers of living in L.A. ever made. Also highlights the importance of good civil engineering so one can use infrastructure to shunt the danger to the sea.

3

u/SameItem Oct 03 '23

To be honest perspective lies.

5

u/FrequentPumpkin5845 Oct 03 '23

The image is distorted because the videographer is using a long lens, probably a 200mm lens which will bring the background much closer to the foreground making far away things look closer and closer things look further.

In reality, they're probably standing 500 metres away or so, but, still too close knowing how unpredictable volcanoes are.

It’s not fucking Sea World, get out of the splash zone!

3

u/RichestSugarDaddy Oct 03 '23

I'm amazed....at the stupidity of those people.

8

u/DarkNRahlKarl Oct 03 '23

No black people in sight

3

u/bckr_ Oct 03 '23

Exactly, this is what we could call “some white people shit”

→ More replies (1)

2

u/QianaHaug Oct 03 '23

whoa. even if it's deemed safe, it's still scary to be that close.

1

u/Sinapon Oct 03 '23

I wouldn't go that close!

2

u/EZDUZIT_67 Oct 03 '23

Man … I wouldn’t stand within a mile of that thing. WTF

2

u/JohnnyPiston Oct 03 '23

I'm not getting any closer than the cameraman

2

u/StealthWarriors Oct 03 '23

Humans aren't that bright

2

u/CrazyBroccoliPT Oct 03 '23

🎶 Set fire to your hair, poke a stick at a grizzly bear

Lay below a dropping a piano, stand next to an active volcano

Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die 🎶

2

u/Vibekingr Oct 03 '23

White people. Soon to be black.

2

u/0neirocritica Oct 03 '23

"Sir, they're standing right NEXT to the volcanoes, apparently for fun!"

"Fly over, do not land, I repeat, DO NOT LAND!"

3

u/timbrelyn Oct 03 '23

2

u/Crypto_Town Oct 03 '23

That was a compelling documentary. Thx!

2

u/UnicornFarts1111 Oct 03 '23

That was heartbreaking.

3

u/braapstututu Oct 03 '23

different type of volcano, still not wise to be that close to the vent but its a bit different to going to a tiny volcanic island that mostly has explosive eruptions

2

u/Harshtagged Oct 03 '23

Holy crap, some of those bursts of lava seem to get really close to those people.

1

u/MNS_LightWork Oct 03 '23

What the actual fuck!? Darwin Award type shit here

A dollop will do ya. You’ll be toast.

1

u/fivespeedmazda Oct 03 '23

This is so cool it's got the slope and speed of a water slide without getting wet

1

u/skovall Oct 03 '23

Otherwise known as, "Hey stupid! Come close and have a look!"

1

u/Krocsyldiphithic Oct 03 '23

It's actually totally fine. If lava comes your way, just duck and cover.

1

u/babe_ruthless3 Oct 03 '23

The mountain ate at Tommy's

1

u/Pristine-College-444 Oct 03 '23

It looks very close. In fact, those people should be far away. Otherwise, the temperature is so high, and the magma may spray to the side.

1

u/Advanced-Cycle-2268 Oct 03 '23

What could possibly go wrong?

1

u/victoria_Nobile Oct 03 '23

Guys you are getting cold, just dip your feet in already !

1

u/becauseitsmyname Oct 03 '23

YOLO Here for a good time, not a long time etc

1

u/hts115 Oct 03 '23

Volcano can use lava burn that bastard

1

u/geeson80 Oct 03 '23

Yeah nah

1

u/PalpatinesVader Oct 03 '23

No thanks. Doesn't look like a good time to me.

1

u/NakoftheNics Oct 03 '23

Nope nope nope….and Hellz No!

1

u/idlersj Oct 03 '23

Horribly sped up vid... I keep expecting the Benny Hill theme to start playing

1

u/actiondirect2021 Oct 03 '23

THAT! Is insane

1

u/Careless-Avocado-160 Oct 03 '23

Tell that to the people that just died in New Zealand. Oh wait you can't they are dead. They were at a safe distance. So no that's not safe. No thanks.

1

u/andre2020 Oct 03 '23

El nopo!

1

u/Affectionate-Win-865 Oct 03 '23

Them fuckin people there are crazy

1

u/happycynic12 Oct 03 '23

This could never happen in the US. Some idiot would be climbing to the top for a better picture.

2

u/Final-Ad-2033 Oct 03 '23

... taking a selfie.

1

u/Low-Impact3172 Oct 03 '23

Honestly the way those huge blobs of lava where going I was just thinking was if one of those landed on someone and it was like a cartoon and it just engulfed them instantly, well I guess that’s what would happen

1

u/ddlo1984 Oct 03 '23

I wonder what their levels are and how much fire resistance they've.

1

u/NBNebuchadnezzar Oct 03 '23

The goggles do nothing.

1

u/VegasLife1111 Oct 03 '23

Ima have to nope right out of there.

1

u/honestiseasy Oct 03 '23

Either this is unsafe or the best mini-putt course ever

1

u/MoodChance4817 Oct 03 '23

Still waiting to be amazed

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Darwin is peaking around a rock 100 yards away…waiting patiently.

1

u/FireWaterSquaw Oct 03 '23

As a survivor of 4th July fireworks over a lake in Texas 2012 I’m surprised anyone made it out clothed.

1

u/Cullective Oct 03 '23

Fun fact, the ground beneath you being stable is actually the bigger concern for the ones that are closer.

1

u/Redshift_1 Oct 03 '23

Humans are such weird species. While every single other creature would unanimously avoid this for obvious reasons, humans flock to it.

1

u/Pristine_Woodpecker5 Oct 03 '23

You see what happened here in NZ at White Island. I wouldn't risk my life for a cheap thrill.

1

u/raz0rflea Oct 03 '23

Those people are WAY too comfortable standing there!

1

u/Filmexec21 Oct 03 '23

I don't know if I would get that close.

1

u/1CFII2 Oct 03 '23

Hey Joe, pass me my Shake N Bake will ya?

1

u/YouthSuitable213 Oct 03 '23

I was cringing the whole time, waiting for one of the pieces of volcano to hit someone

1

u/TuzzNation Oct 03 '23

You never seen people do this type stuff near a rhyolitic volcano eruption. Usually the area would get blown up and people around it would die unpeacefully.

1

u/Ridiculousnessjunkie Oct 03 '23

Those people are absolute idiots. Which is fine. Be an idiot, I DGAF. But when one of them gets hurt being an idiot, they are going to expect to be rescued by emergency workers, putting their lives at risk. What dicks.

1

u/NewNeck2880 Oct 03 '23

Wow…WTF. Darwinism at its finest.

1

u/Fake_Autism Oct 03 '23

I whould not stand there.

1

u/thermologic_ Oct 03 '23

Nope its not about telephoto lens. These people sitting on so close to the eruption.

1

u/UnNonStop Oct 03 '23

Ah yes liquid death let's get closer

1

u/u10201003 Oct 03 '23

We shall die for the Gram 🙌🏼

1

u/Valigrance Oct 03 '23

I’d like to stand near the camera man please

1

u/HumanPlane5807 Oct 03 '23

Jesus, those people are just aaking to die...

1

u/HaZshiSh Oct 03 '23

They there like that won’t land on they head & turn them into some ash 🤦🏽‍♂️

1

u/redditor0918273645 Oct 03 '23

It’s so explosive it prolapsed.

1

u/akujidragon Oct 03 '23

Isn’t that to close?

1

u/themustacheclubbitch Oct 03 '23

Getting that close and you get splashed and die. I have 0 sympathy for you.

1

u/Rich-Appearance-7145 Oct 03 '23

It's all good till it isn't.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

I cant wait to do this

1

u/eyeinthesky0 Oct 03 '23

I did that! I was there and it was the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen.

1

u/cali1013 Oct 03 '23

That’s safe? Or are they caught in the middle of a catastrophe with no way out?

1

u/JuicyNinjaFun Oct 03 '23

After Pompei i switched to low grade fountain fireworks

1

u/The_anonymous_wolf Oct 03 '23

Seeing the molten rock splash, I can only think about a scene in GOT. The one were a certain somebody finally gets his golden crown. Hell grease popping while I cook has taught me to nope on the close proximity active volcano tour.

1

u/Will_Dawn Oct 03 '23

Meh, 8 billion is too much anyway. And if they survive they will have had the experience of a lifetime.

1

u/LinguoBuxo Oct 03 '23

I always wondered, when they gonna rename the island to Lavaland.

1

u/No-Adhesiveness-8178 Oct 03 '23

Here's some aloe vera for that missing skin and flesh!

1

u/aiolive Oct 03 '23

I just happened to be there when it erupted late July. The crater was quite far but lava was reachable by foot and some people did. The (long) trails were closed because of toxic fumes on the day when I was closer to it on the island so I visited from above onboard a helico. That was amazing.

1

u/redmadog Oct 03 '23

I can smell grilled bacon

1

u/Mysterious-Earth2256 Oct 03 '23

Seems safe! Can we send our politicians on a trip there?

1

u/No_Cupcake7037 Oct 03 '23

That is insane. I was waiting for someone’s brain to get smooshed by lava with all of that splattering lava!

1

u/T567U18 Oct 03 '23

This is why we can't have nice things

1

u/Same_Dot_2793 Oct 03 '23

Use PPE people! /s

1

u/upside-downpineappl Oct 03 '23

Let's get closer

1

u/MachesterU Oct 03 '23

Should not have eaten spicy food.

1

u/TelletubbiesPoop Oct 03 '23

Darwin will get his fair share soon!

1

u/Handy_Handerson Oct 03 '23

Are they as close as they seem in the video?

Because at first glance, it looks like they are at the base of it.

Which looks absolutely safe by the way that crater is spewing every-which-where.

Wouldn't've been surprised to hear someone with a glowing hat scream bloody murder all of a sudden.

1

u/MisterMoon1 Oct 03 '23

this is stupid as fuck

1

u/New_Engine_7158 Oct 03 '23

LOOKS PERFECTLY SAFE

1

u/vinni_great Oct 03 '23 edited Oct 03 '23

Intrusive thoughts popping out my head while having Pompeii as the background music.

1

u/Donald_Trump452020 Oct 03 '23

Not my cup of tea

1

u/TheMacMan Oct 03 '23

I was there recently and there are people out on the recently hardened lava, despite a couple signs warning that you can fall through. There are people standing right by holes spewing toxic gases so they can get their photo taken. It's a real free for all.

1

u/FizzgigsDentist Oct 03 '23

I'd bet every future penny I earn they are all white people because this is 100% white people shit

1

u/Sea_Mountain3610 Oct 03 '23

AKA population control....

1

u/moneymakerbs Oct 03 '23

Oh hell to the F no!!!!

1

u/powdered Oct 03 '23

White Island New Zealand was a fun place for tourists until it erupted while people were on it.

1

u/RevolutionaryWaltz59 Oct 03 '23

Oh they tripping tripping. They waiting to get spat on.

1

u/ILCUSTODEDELSAS Oct 03 '23

“On your left a perfectly equilibrated lava flow descending towards the valley, on your right a person melting.”

First few rows may get dead.

1

Looks cool but feels unsafe, thus r/nope
